Spence's Stained Glass

Where broken pieces matter.

A story of loss

In Feb. 2026, I learned that my cousin Spence, a loving big brother, died by suicide.

Just months before, he had encouraged me to dust off my stained-glass supplies, which had been in storage for over 10 years. Together, we designed a light fixture for his dining room. Creating that piece became one of the most meaningful experiences we shared.

After his passing, I turned to stained glass as a way to process my grief. Using leftover scraps, I created candle holders for our family; small, glowing tributes to his light. Those projects were a lifeline when I was drowning in grief.

One day, as I was grinding the edges of glass, I remembered Spence asking why stained glass isn’t included in my work portfolio. I laughed and said I can’t include a hobby in my work. He challenged me to figure out a way.

And I did.

A movement for transformation

Spence’s Stained Glass has grown into a fundraising movement for my restorative justice work, and it also serves as a tribute to Spence, who was enthusiastic about restorative justice practices.

Spence’s Stained Glass is currently raising awareness and funds for community programs being hosted at the Lighthouse Shelter in Orillia, Ontario.

We raise money by:

  • Selling products (made by the community for the community)
  • Selling workshops (small group gatherings where people do stained glass and learn about transforming relationships)

In our workshops, we transform broken glass into meaningful art. People explore hundreds of unique glass colors and shapes and carefully create their own design, crafting a personal stained-glass symbol of transformation. Groups are also introduced to the principles of restorative justice and how they can support relationship goals.

Restorative justice

Restorative justice focuses on repairing harm, rebuilding trust, and strengthening relationships. It centers on accountability, compassion, and belonging, particularly for individuals and families impacted by mental health challenges, addiction, or involvement with the justice system. This approach shifts focus from punishment to responsibility, repair, and growth. Why this work matters

Spence's Stained Glass is rooted in the belief that meaningful change happens through connection. Art creates space for reflection, conversation, and healing. Whether through creating together or sharing finished pieces, this work invites people to slow down, gather, and remember that even broken pieces can be transformed into something whole.
